"Is love enough?" I ask myself this question. "Is the love for dance enough to make a living from it?" Obviously, it's not enough as dancers and other creatives have to pay bills as anyone else. So why hasn't the pay for dancers gone up in the last two decades? Why are dancers in one of the last places in terms of salary in the entertainment industry? Because we have allowed it. Yes, we love it. And that passion is something that keep us moving and finding the way. But it is time to stand up for ourselves and give ourselves the value we deserve.
Here is why:
We have the magic wand to take people to other places, different worlds and help them to get out of their minds.
We can speak universal language.
We can express something through movement that is not possible verbally.
We make the invisible visible.
We shift the energy.
We uplift.
We touch the emotions.
We bring joy.
We amaze people.
We can enhance the artistic experience.
Movement heals and is needed now more than ever.
Dance touches us on all levels, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Dance is a social experience and connects people.
We inspire.
We can tell stories through dance. And in ancient traditions and indigenous tribes many stories were preserved and passed down through dance.
